Tony Butala, the founding member of the popular vocal group The Lettermen, died on November 1, 2026, at age 87. His death was confirmed in an announcement from the group, which honored his decades-long contribution to American popular music. No official cause of death was disclosed.

Butala helped form The Lettermen in the late 1950s alongside Jim Pike and Bob Engemann. The trio became widely recognized for its smooth three-part harmonies and romantic pop recordings, attracting audiences throughout the 1960s and beyond.

Among the group’s best-known songs were The Way You Look Tonight, When I Fall in Love, and Goin’ Out of My Head/Can’t Take My Eyes Off You. Their recordings earned Grammy nominations and established The Lettermen as a familiar name in traditional pop music.

Before forming the group, Butala began his entertainment career as a child performer. He remained closely associated with The Lettermen for more than six decades before retiring from live performances in 2019.

The group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2020, recognizing its lasting contribution to music.
